We can't rely on mainstream media to tell our stories. That's why we don't lock Queerty articles behind a paywall. Will you support our mission with a contribution today?
You know, I’ve seen the barrage of media reports and the jubilant celebrations over the election of the nation’s first African-American president. And it is an important milestone. But you know, most of us voted for him because we preferred his policies, we wanted to rid ourselves of Republicans, or because he was just the better candidate — not because of the color of his skin.
You are absolutely right that no one (with the exception, perhaps, of African Americans themselves) voted for Obama because he is black, but that does not make it any less momentous!
No, Citizengeek, not even we voted for him because he’s black. That’s just a plus. You actually think any blacks (who aren’t rich) would have voted for McCain?
CitizenGeek: “You are absolutely right that no one (with the exception, perhaps, of African Americans themselves) voted for Obama because he is black, but that does not make it any less momentous”!
Please remember that Black Americans have ALWAYS overwhelmingly voted for the Democratic ticket. This time the Democratic Presidential nominee was Black American (well, Bi-racial. If it had been a White womyn (Clinton), Black Americans would have overwhelmingly voted for Clinton as they did Carter, B. Clinton, Gore, and Kerry.
Please drop the meme that Black people only voted for President-Elect Obama because he is Black. It is indeed momentous, but remember, Black people did not come out in droves during the primaries.
Now if we could just work on socially conservative religious Black and Latino people with regard to civil rights for LGBT Americans.
Arguably, Hillary Clinton was closer to being President than John McCain was. If she had won the primary, she probably would be President-elect right now.
I never said it wasn’t momentous. What I’m saying is the media is playing this as though we all voted for Obama to break through racism and to shatter the glass ceiling for African-Americans and to set right a long national record of bigotry and prejudice. It’s a nice story, but it’s not true. Yes, all those things are important and a byproduct of the election. But I voted for Obama because I wanted a Democrat in office. Period. I wish the media would stop trying to tell me I did so because I wanted to send a cultural message.
