If there’s one thing Broadway legend Patti LuPone is not it’s a homophobe. She’s been an LGBTQ ally since the very beginning and we’re proud to have her in our corner.
That said, even allies mess up sometimes.
Yesterday, the two-time Tony and Grammy award winner took to Twitter to express her disgust with Sen. Lindsey Graham after he declined to call Donald Trump racist over the whole “go back to where you came from” controversy.
“Lindsey Graham, you are a disgrace,” LuPone tweeted. “On a personal note, why don’t you just bite the bullet and come out. You might just come to your senses.”
How about we take this to the next level?
Our newsletter is like a refreshing cocktail (or mocktail) of LGBTQ+ entertainment and pop culture, served up with a side of eye-candy.
Lindsey Graham you are a disgrace. On a personal note, why don’t you just bite the bullet and come out. You might just come to your senses.

Now, we totally get it. Lindsey Graham is not a good guy and certainly no friend to the LGBTQ community. Not only did he oppose the repeal of DADT and gay-inclusive immigration reform, but he opposes gay marriage, calling it a “road to polygamy.”

That said, peddling gay rumors is not a productive way of getting one’s point across, and outing people is never OK. Not to mention, the whole “Lindsay Graham is gay!” joke is so passé. And, anyway, his sexuality has absolutely nothing to do with Donald Trump’s racist remarks.
Needless to say, people were not pleased with Ms. LuPone’s wisecrack.
come on, Patti

Wow! Patti LuPone is homophobic! Who knew?
— Kevin (@razorchild63) July 18, 2019
The double standards at play here. Imagine a conservative tweeting this at Anderson Cooper. It would be national news.
— Dave (@SpannerDave) July 18, 2019
Don’t use us as a weapon, Patti.

Spouting homophobia to own the conservatives
— TheoryCraft (@Taobender) July 18, 2019
I was a fan. Saw you in concert years ago in New Orleans and then again a few years back at Symphony Hall in Atlanta. Shame on you!
— Pink Elephant (@PinkElephantBoy) July 19, 2019
I fail to see how Lindsey’s sexual behavior is any of your business.
— Steph (@steph93065) July 18, 2019
Oh Patti this ain’t it
— Peter Tingle (@heyitsurban) July 18, 2019
So woke that homophobia is okay just because it’s directed at someone on the right
— Wes (@wesman0615) July 18, 2019
Ms. Lupone, I teach a high school theatre class and want my students to admire your work. Please don’t ruin it for me 🙁
— Rachelle Thompson (@rwtopaz5) July 19, 2019
LuPone is yet to address the backlash and the tweet remains up on her Twitter page. We believe this was just a slip up and she’ll make it right.

How is that homophobic?
edgyfotoguy
Agreed. How is this homophobic? He is a closet case and needs to come out. Trump has blackmail on him.
mdrguy1
Are you f-ing kidding me?! This is not homophobic in the least. I support her 1,000%. LG is awful, and he peddles in lies, disinformation, and numerous policies that harm the LGBTQ community. Judicial activism from the far right will be with us for decades, thanks to him and his party. So how is it wrong to call him on his hypocrisy? If Roy Cohen were alive, I’d think it fine to ask the same of him: why don’t you come out already?!
edgyfotoguy
Exactly. And he’s a closet case dbag. Anyone knows that. Surprised at this kind of article bagging a long time ally. Lindsay is the evil here not her.
funpitt412
This old hag is homophobic for trying to say Lindsey Graham is in the closet like it is a bad thing. Just your typical straight person that does not understand using the phrase “that is gay” is degrading to the LGBTQ community.
Juanjo
You are a fool

my only time to agree with juanblo.

Firstly, we really need to calm down on the “ally” hype. She’s been on Broadway for decades. Is she really going to be anything but an “ally”? Hyping up “allies” often lead to people saying and doing problematic things. Aka Miley Cyrus pretty much saying that “gays” like Mariah Carey ‘cause they’re shallow and then looking to be embraced as “queer” a couple years later. Secondly, what Lapone said wasn’t homophobic. But using someone being supposedly closeted in order to shade them is problematic.
StandingAndWalking
The difference between this and a Republican smearing Anderson Cooper is that Patti LuPone is not painting being gay as bad. She’s not saying Lindsay Graham is gay as an insult, she’s slamming him for being a closeted coward.
It’s bad form and she’d have been better keeping her mouth shut but it’s not homophobic in the slightest. Stop with the false equivalency. I know that it’s easier to vent our anger at our allies because they’re less likely to have guns and are way less scary than the real villains but it does no good in the long run beyond a momentary feeling of smug self-satisfaction.
Godabed
Lindsey is as gay as Aaron Shrock, Gay gay gay gay gay, and everyone knows it. There is a reason those gay Craigslist post used to sky rocket at Republican conventions. There are tons of gay men in that party. There is actual data to prove that fact.
If your gaydar is not going off on Lindsey yours may be broken sweetie
SiamSean
I’m gay, and with Lupone on this

For those who have an issue with her calling out Miss Lindsay Graham:
FCUK OFF!

Spare us your faux outrage!

Notaswj: Oh look!!! How cute!!!
A smcubag troll slithered onto this thread!!
JaredMacBride
My goodness some people get easily triggered over nothing. She only said what millions of gay and lesbian Americans have been saying for years.
bobbyjoe
Oh, please. For years, outing someone has been considered as something gays should not do– UNLESS the closeted person was someone who actively pushed anti-gay legislation and tried to hurt the LGBT community. Lindsey Graham had long fallen into that last category. So publicly calling out his hypocrisy and moral cowardice is not homophobia. Lupone isn’t saying being gay is bad, she’s saying his hypocrisy is bad. And that’s what we should all be saying.
Donston
There are definitely idiotic and sensitive “queers” who find protecting the closet more important than calling out hypocrisy and damaging behaviors. The thing is “Lindsay Graham is gay” is old news. And if he is homosexual/homo-romantic/overall homo-leaning/gay that doesn’t really change what he’s always been about politically. So, attacking him for being a closet case doesn’t end up serving much purpose.
notasjw
This is what PC , alt left culture has brought us to, its pretty amusing!

“outing people is never OK”
Lol… what? Outing antigay politicians is a storied tradition in queer liberation movements. This is a phenomenally bad take.
Brian
Nobody seemed to have a problem with this being done to Aaron Schick, even before the groping and butthole pics surfaced. Strange that it would be an issue now
Ryan99
Queerty’s fake outrage is just clickbait from click whores.
Outing anti-gay politicians is exactly what outing is about.
Never mind that there isn’t any outing at all here. Even my dead grandmother knows Lindsey’s a homo. He needs to get over himself.
skyboy63
This makes me love Patti even more. She is an ally not a foe. She has said nothing that I haven’t said myself. Lindsey Graham has done NOTHING for the LGBTQ community. Sometimes other gay men wear me the f**k out with their bullsh*t and this is one of those times. Patti you have my support. Eff Lindsey and his closeted ass.
justsimple
Not a fan of hers. She is just crude. Met her once before and she just was friendly to me and I always think of that interaction when her hands comes up. But she does have a voice. Ha
Who cares that she says this but imagine if a Republican supporter said that said that the news would call it an attack on gay rights. Everyon needs to stop being sensitive.
Just ironic how one person saying this is funny and the other one is an attack
TedV
Patti’s been a gay ally for 35 years, going back to the AIDS crisis when she probably singlehandedly raised millions for GMHC. She’s also incredibly talented and a one of the nicest performers I’ve ever met. She is calling out a probably-gay politician who has advocated and voted for anti-gay legislation, and the tradition in our community – going back to Michelangelo Signorile – is that these are the people you DO out, for their hypocrisy and moralizing. There is NOTHING homophobic about it. BTW, this story is being tsk tsk’d about on Fox News. Is that really an organization we want to align ourselves with? Wake up, sheeple!!
Toofie
So ridiculous to call Patti’s comment homophobic. It’s not. All this nonsense attacking allies over perceived slights; let’s worry about our real enemies. As for “outing” Lindsey, nothing wrong with that. A gay guy voting against gays should always be called out.
inbama
These idiotic comments are most likely from Trump-supporting Log Cabin queens.
It’s the same tactic Republicans are using to deflect from Trump’s racist tweets about Rep. Ilhan Omar – have Nazis like Gorka are accuse her of antisemitism.
justgeo
Patti is not being homophobic and any one who sees it as that is an asshole. The slam is at his shame and lying get your heads screwed (on better).
jckfmsincty
I’m for anything that irritates Ms. Lindsay Graham.
Ryan99
>>and outing people is never OK. <<
This is utter nonsense.
And suggesting Lindsey get over himself and come out isn't homophobic. The entire universe knows he's a homo.
Roan
Drag him out of his closet. Shame him. Make him the pariah that he is.
