It used to be that gay and straight men just didnât hang much. Surely, homophobia was the main cause of the estrangement. It was the ever-charming Andy Rooney who once complained that while he was not apposed to equality he certainly âwouldnât want to spend much time in a small roomâ with a gay man. (The feeling was mutual.)
But Rooney is now dead â may be rest in peace â and these times they are a-changing.
Perhaps straight men have let down their guards after figuring out that not every gay guy wants to sleep with them. Or perhaps gay and straight guys alike have simply realized that, at the end of the day, the sexual attractions of your friends donât matter. Sex is irrelevant to friendship.
Whatever the reason, there seems to be a whole new comfort level between the orientations.
Check out these five adorable gay/straight bromances. And expect to see many, many more in the coming years.
Andy Cohen and Sean Avery
Total top Andy Cohen and NHL star Sean Avery met at a party in the Hamptons back in 2011 and immediately hit it off.
âWeâre brothers from a different mother,â Cohen once told New York Magazine.
Last fall, the Bravo exec denied he and Avery were an item, telling TMZ, âSean Avery is straight. Do you understand that? So a gay guy and a straight guy should be able to be friends.â
Then he added: âListen, Iâd be happy if Sean and I were banginâ ⌠but itâs not [happening].â
Whomp, whomp.
Sirs Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart
The Gandalf-Picard bromance heated up earlier this year when Sirs Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart made the media rounds together to promote the latest X-Men movie.
Their bromance includes taking lots of selfies together and regularly tweeting at each other, as well as McKellen officiating Stewartâs wedding last September.
When asked about what draws them to one aother, Stewart told Yahoo! News it was âboth our differences and our similarities,â which includes being âpassionate about Shakespeare and being in the theater and we went to the [Royal Shakespeare Company] to learn our jobs⌠and we are mutant superheroes!â
Tom Daley and Liam Payne
The openly gay diving champ and the allegedly straight One Direction star first connected in the summer of 2012 after Liam tweeted his support to Tom after he was flamed on Twitter. A fiery bromance ignited.
âIâm really good mates with Liam,â Daley told the Daily Star in December 2012. âUsually on a typical boysâ night, youâll find him and me down at Funky Buddha having a few drinks and a dance. Either that or weâll go for a Chinese or a Wagamama.â
Weâd go for a Wagamama with these two cuties any day of the week.
Frank Ocean and John Mayer
R&B crooner Frank Ocean and rocker John Mayer have what many might consider a âworking bromance.â The twosome have collaborated on several occasions over the past few years.
The duo first joined forces on the track âWhiteâ off Oceanâs hit album Channel Orange. Mayer also appeared in the Oceanâs music video âPyramidsâ and performed alongside him on SNL in 2012. A year later, Ocean lent his vocals for a track on Mayerâs album Paradise Valley.
âFrank is such an interesting, deep, touched, wonderful guy,â Mayer told Rolling Stone last year. âThey donât make a lot of other Frank Oceans.â
Zachary Quinto and Chris Pine
The Star Trek co-starsâ bromance may be one of the cutest out there.
Not only do Zachary Quinto and Chris Pine have great chemistry on screen, but theyâre totally adorable together during interviews and on the red carpetâjoking, high-fiving, and complimenting one another. The duo is so close that when asked what color Pineâs eyes are, without looking Quinto replied: âCerulean. Bombay Sapphire. The deep end of the pool.â
Oh, and rumor has it they even have matching tattoos.
Last year, Quinto opened up about his close friendship with Pine to Out Magazine, saying, âI look forward to the press tour and all of the activity thatâs kicked up around the movie lately so we can reconnect and have another version of the experience.â
Sounds like true platonic love.

That guy with Tom Daley is not Liam Payne. I love that they’re friends, but wrong photo.

@calista: Liam Payne?
jjose712
@calista: Yes, that guy is not Liam, and frankly i don’t even know if they are friends anymore. They were close some time ago, but i think there’s a good while since there’s any pic of them (or nothing related to them). Of course both are very busy, but if Liam has time to pay a visit to the Duck Dinasty clan it’s supposed he has time to visit one of his best friends too

The guy in the photo with Tom Daley is actually Leandro Penna, the ex-fiance of Katie Price. They were hanging out a lot in 2012 and at that time, Tom mentioned that “we help each other out with the ladies”. It doesn’t seem that they are friends anymore, but it does raise questions about their… friendship.

Chris Pine is one of my favorite people on the planet. So down to earth and funny and cares so much about others. It doesn’t surprise me that he’s such great friends with Zachary and probably many other people in the LGBT community, Hollywood or other. I’d marry Chris today đ

Andy Cohen disgusts me. Andy is to housewives what Michael Vick was to pit bulls. Purposefully putting volatile mixes of sometimes unstable people together, stirring the pot, and sitting back counting his money while he watches them fight it out on television. It’s really so sad and disgusting that he’s made this a sport.

@David: you do realize that “reality” is all scripted…however pitbull fights are not…go and unclench your anus and chill…Andy did not open the door to fake reality TV but alas it is here and so is he…but on a different note Andy and his best straight friend, Sean can come over ANYTIME…

@NoCagada: It is actually a word, but not the correct one given the context. Lighten up Francis, it’s just a typo.
